It was easy and you can too.

We live in Houston, Texas in the inner city where there is no space to grow an outdoor garden. Even if we had the land to grow outdoors, I would be concerned about the air quality since we are so close to the smoggy city.

After seeing a post on Instagram, I remember thinking, “This IS the future of plant based eating! Is this how our food will be grown when we all live on spaceships?” (Maybe I was getting ahead of myself for the latter part but either way- it did seem to be a technology that would be in our future.)

I immediately shared the post with my husband and we began dreaming about growing our own food. We started asking ourselves all the questions you are probably asking yourself now, like— How complicated would this be? Could we actually do it? Is it affordable? What kind of plants can we grow? Does it use plastic? How long until I can start eating my first harvest?

What is Lettuce Grow Farmstand?

Let’s dive into the Q&A session!

How does it work?

Choose your Farmstand size and if you will need Glow Ring Extensions.
The Farmstands come in 5 different sizes. The size you pick depends completely on you. We have the 36 plant option which is 6’2 with the Glow Ring Extensions. You will want the Glow Ring Extensions if you are planning on keeping the Farmstand inside. The lights and water cycles are on a timer so you can set the times that work best. *When thinking about a size, keep in mind the Farmstand will need to be close to an electrical outlet for both indoor and outdoor use.
Selecting your seedlings. Currently there is FREE shipping if you buy 12 or more seedlings. (Be sure to check Lettuce Grow website to see if they are still offering free shipping at the time of purchase) A seedling is a baby plant that has already past the sprouting season. It is ready to go into the Farmstand when it arrives at your door.
Assemble your tower. This part was a bit scary when the boxes arrived. I imagined it was going to be something like assembling a piece of Ikea furniture but that couldn’t been further from the truth. I seriously over estimated the level of simplicity. Follow the directions to set the timers, add water, and add nutrients.
Put in your seedlings. Literally you drop the seedlings into these cute little cups and place them in the Farmstand. Yes folks it’s that easy.

What can I grow?

There is a full list of seedling on the Lettuce Grow website. I grow a bazillion different types of dark leafy greens because they are my absolute favorite AND our family eats so much of them. We also grow a year round selection of fresh herbs. Keep in mind root vegetables aren’t a good fit for the Farmstand because there isn’t any dirt for them to grow in.

What’s the cost?

This depends on you. There are lots of different options which will effect the final cost. The Lettuce Grow website is easy to use and understand, there are no hidden fees, everything is upfront. They offer financing in monthly payments through Affirm. The Lettuce Grow people have made this process as easy as possible.

Can I add more levels to Farmstand?

This is a great question. What if you buy a smaller unit and after finding out how incredibly easy and awesome it is you decide you want to grow more. Can you make your existing stand bigger? Yes you can by add an “extension kit” at a later date.

Are there any tools I wish I had from the beginning?

YES, absolutely. If you plan on keeping the Farmstand in a location that if may need to be moved from time to time, I recommend adding on the dolly. I did not get the dolly but I wish I had gotten it. I will get one when we order our next Farmstand. The other thing I wish I had bought was shears with a thin needle nose tip like these.

What is Lettuce Give Program?
